ScottMadden Discusses Natural Gas-Power Interdependence in Its Winter 2012-2013 Energy Industry Update

ScottMadden, Inc. - 02.27.2013

ScottMadden, Inc., one of North America's leading energy consulting firms, recently released The Energy Industry Update. Themed “Decision Time,” this issue features ScottMadden’s perspective on significant events and emerging trends in the industry. The Energy Industry Update is received by thousands of industry leaders semi-annually.

One issue coming into sharper relief, and discussed in the Update, is gas-power interdependence. Natural gas prices remain low by historical standards, and many foresee a “dash to gas” in the U.S. power generation mix. The interplay of the power and gas industries is raising increasing concerns about energy reliability and prices.

“The natural gas and electric systems were neither designed to do what we are asking them to do, nor to work together,” said Stu Pearman, partner and energy practice leader at ScottMadden. “Whether it is planning, cost allocation, or paying for reserve margins, putting the two systems together is like fitting together puzzle pieces to make a picture—but the pieces come from different puzzles. And the picture is different, region by region.”

The Energy Industry Update also discusses:

. An assessment of implications energy and environmental policy changes as a result of the 2012 elections and leadership changes in both the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency

. Recent developments in utility rates, in the wake of low to flat electric demand growth and some major storm events over the past couple of years

. The outlook for renewables given the extension of federal incentives for at least a year and upcoming compliance dates for a number of state renewable portfolio standards

ScottMadden and Energy Central will be hosting an interactive webinar on Friday, March 8, 2013 from 12:00–1:00 PM EST. During “The State of the Energy Industry,” ScottMadden experts will elaborate on major industry issues. To learn more or to register, please click here.
