This free on-demand webcast is based on ScottMadden's upcoming Energy Industry Update: It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine), a semi-annual publication featuring inside views of recent significant events and emerging trends that is received by more than 10,000 industry leaders.

Our complimentary webcast will provide you with the insights and know how to navigate today’s complex, ever-changing industry. This is a great opportunity to take a step back and consider what is happening, what it means, and where our industry is headed.

During this session, ScottMadden’s energy experts will share their views and field questions related to solar curtailment, Australia’s response to distributed energy resources (DERs), and smart cities.

Unlocking Smart Cities for Utilities: What and How

"Smart Cities" is an idea getting a lot of attention, both in public policy and industry circles. Why? People talk about the need for infrastructure improvement, urbanization, the Internet of Things, competition amongst cities for growth and economic development, and a desire to make cities more livable, sustainable, and technologically advanced. However, there are still more questions than answers. During the webinar, Stuart Pearman will address a few of them:

  • Is this a fad or trend?
  • What is a smart city, anyway?
  • What's the difference between the talk and the walk – what's happening on the ground?
  • What's the utility's role?
  • How do we get started?

Innovative Solar PPAs: Finding Win-Win Solutions for Excess Solar Power

Operational challenges, including curtailment, are becoming more common with the explosive growth of utility-scale solar. Paul Quinlan will talk about the findings of a recent white paper prepared by ScottMadden and the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA). Key topics will include:

  • Are traditional solar PPA structures tried and true or rigid and outdated?
  • What are the three alternative PPA models examined by ScottMadden and SEPA?
  • What key questions should be considered before moving to alternative PPA models?

A Look Down Under: Distributed Generation Lessons from Australia

Australia is a global leader in distributed solar PV. The country has 1.5 million solar PV systems while penetration levels reach 65% of homes in some suburban neighborhoods. Chris Vlahoplus will discuss lessons from a SEPA fact-finding mission to Australia. Key topics will include:

  • What drove the explosive growth of distributed solar PV in Australia?
  • How have Australian utilities successfully integrated huge amounts of solar PV?
  • What are the unintended consequences of the market growth on Australian utilities?

Additionally, all registered attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the latest Energy Industry Update.
